WordPress 5.8.1 Security Release

More than 60 bugs got fixed. An important part also was the security update – so you should update your WordPress Pages as soon as possible! This is a start-term maintenance release and the next big major update will be WordPress 5.9 which is planned for the 14th December

Jetpack acquired Social Image Generator

Jetpack also acquired Social Image Generator, a plugin you can use to automatically generate share images on social platforms. Currently you can't buy the plugin any longer, and it's functions will be integrated into jetpack

Over 1 Million Sites Affected by Gutenberg Template Library & Redux Framework Vulnerabilities

This is quite a bug one, so if you are using Gutenberg you should definitely make sure you update this plugin as soon as possible to at least version 4.2.13

What to expect from WordPress 5.9?

The main goal for 2021 is getting full site editing to all WordPress users, including these features:

  • Blocks + intrinsic web design
  • Navigation menus
  • Interface for theme.json
  • Refining editing flows for block themes
  • New default theme
  • Additional design tools

Additional for the platform these updates might make it in:

  • Pattern insertion + creation
  • Unzip/Rollback Failsafes
  • PHPUnit Tests
  • Improved compatibility with PHP 8.0 and 8.1

Planned release date might be the 14th December

Worldwide WordPress Virtual 5K Set for October 1-30, 2021

Automattic is organizing its 2nd annual Worldwide WordPress 5K during the month of October this year. The registration is free and participants will be able to donate to a charity of their choice, with Automattic matching donations up to $50,000.

Native Land Digital maintains extensive maps of Native and Indigenous homelands and communities worldwide. Now WordPress sites can embed a search tool using their data into any post or page with a free plugin.

Termly Responds to Feedback, Updates Its Cookie Consent Banner Limits

In July, Termly announced its acquisition of the GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner plugin., turning what was once a free offering into, essentially, a commercial SaaS product. Users could run the service for up to 100 visitors. After that, the cheapest tier would cost $180 per year.

After a "smal" backlash the company bumped the limit to 10,000 unique visitors, making it a free solution for far more users..

FSE Program: Insights Into Switching Between Block Themes

The announcement asks users to think about what they would like to see when switching between block themes. The test is open to anyone who wants to participate through September 29.
